We first visited St John in the 1970's and fell in love with the island (we were already in love with each other). We stayed at Caneel Bay and discovered we could rent a villa for the two of us for the cost of one night at Caneel Bay. We have returned every year since, in 1989 purchasing land to build our own dream villa with a sunrise, ideally a sunset, great water views of course, plenty of breezes (which meant an easterly exposure), convenient to Cruz Bay - but not too close to be bothered by the late night noise, a short walk to the water, and land enough to build and have privacy.  Well, we then looked at a ton of property. We climbed trees to see what the view would be like and tried to get a sense of the breezes (a critical ingredient to a successful site).  When we got to the property, which is now Great Expectations, we said 'this is it'. Great breezes, great views of the water, a sunrise right out of the Caribbean, and, an added bonus we did not know when we bought the property (because of the bush) a sunset view. We made an offer that very day, brought our architect friend and his wife down from Boston for 2 weeks to design the Villa, got a construction loan from our friendly banker and spent a million dollars and two years to build the Villa.
