So, you're coming to St. John and you have no idea on how to get around once you are here.
Well, first off, since it's an island, you pretty much have to fly or take a boat to get here. Since most everyone opts to fly, you will be pleased to know that several of the major airline carriers fly directly from the mainland USA to neighboring island St Thomas. St John does not have an airport (or cruise ship port) and we actually like it that way for it keeps the droves of people away from St John! Don't fret though. Once you arrive on St Thomas it is easy to get to St John by ferry or private water taxi.
While it's a small island, most villas are scattered throughout and the many things to do are concentrated on the west end (Cruz Bay), the north side (beaches, parks, etc) and the east end (Coral Bay), therefore you will be needing a jeep or rental car. Coming to St John and not exploring the islands nooks, crannies, and magnificent views is almost criminal! If you aren't on a schedule (at all!), and want to share the ride, for only $1 ($.75 for children) you might want to hop on the little St John Vitran bus which runs from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay. For information about exact routes, schedules, and charges call Vitran at 340774-0165 but be warned they often run on an island-time schedule.
While it isn't the most efficient means of travel, hitch hiking is a common practice on St. John. If you have a timetable, dinner reservation or ferry to catch, or have a party of 3 or more, we wouldn't recommend it. But, if you are in town or at a beach, you could definitely catch a ride almost anywhere asking for a ride.
And don't forget, on St. John, it is customary for hitch-hikers to point their forefinger (not thumb) in the desired direction of travel when attempting to hitch a ride!
